Introducing The Perimenopause Society

Perimenopause affects millions of women, often for a decade or more, yet it remains one of the least understood stages of women's health.

Existing organizations, including The Menopause Society and the Women's Health Initiative, have made enormous contributions to research and public awareness - particularly around life after menopause. As the WHI notes on its website, its vision is to ensure that "post menopausal women thrive."

Let’s get the language right.

Maybe no one ever told you… “Menopause” actually lasts one day.

Yes! Medically, menopause is defined as the 366th day after your final period. Everything before that - the hormone shifts, irregular cycles, mood and sleep changes - is perimenopause.

Getting the language right matters - because what we call things shapes what we study, and what we study shapes the care women receive.

Despite decades of important progress, most scientific research still begins AFTER menopause, not before.

The Perimenopause Society focuses earlier in the timeline: the hormonal transition BEFORE menopause begins, when the body's signals first start to shift.
